How to Use Facebook Audience Insights for Better Targeting

I have a lot of Facebook fatigue. And yet, I set aside my personal feelings when it comes to audience research because Facebook is the best.

With over 2 billion active users globally, Facebook reigns supreme when it comes to social media use.

And it's not “other people” using Facebook. Facebook is the top-reported social network used by Canadian book buyers, according to BNC's “The Canadian Book Buyer 2018.”

Here's why I use Facebook Audience Insights for audience research

Facebook knows a lot about its users. Yes, there is basic demographic information like age, gender, and geographic location. But the real insight is in the many layers of data on their users' interests and behaviour, like where they make retail purchases, the type of phone they have, their online browsing and shopping behaviour, their recent travel destinations, and their political leanings. Here's an epic infographic of every Facebook ad targeting option

I use Facebook Audience Insights for audience research when:

  1. Creating marketing plans for a new title, product, service
  2. Running targeted ad campaigns
  3. Exploring new markets for titles, products or services
  4. Planning author tours and events
  5. Seeking partnerships or collaborators who have an audience similar to mine
  6. Reviewing global markets or examining a specific market internationally
